Update: Two weeks of nighttime lane closures on I-84 between Orchard and Vista interchanges begin Sunday (Oct. 19)
BOISE -  Traffic on I-84 between the Orchard and Vista interchanges will be restricted to one lane in each direction at night for two weeks, from Sunday (Oct. 19) to Sunday (Nov. 2), the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced.

At least one lane in each direction is open from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. weekdays and 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. weekends. All lanes are open during the day.

The lane closures will allow crews to remove a portion of the bridge and begin new concrete placement.

Additional nighttime noise should be expected in the area during demolition. The work is part of the New York Canal widening project.

Crews are widening the I-84 bridge over the New York Canal just east of the Orchard Street Interchange to prepare for future improvements to the Orchard Interchange and I-84.

The speed limit is 55 mph and highway shoulders are restricted on I-84 between Orchard and Vista.  These traffic changes are expected to continue through spring 2009 when the N.Y. Canal widening project is complete. Motorists are advised to watch for workers and equipment in the area.

The improvements are part of a series of interstate improvements planned for I-84 between the Cole and Broadway interchanges through the GARVEE Transportation Program. The program uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to accelerate highway improvement projects.

Concrete Placing Company Inc. of Boise is the contractor for the $4.6 million New York Canal project.

ITD and the Idaho State Police caution motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.Idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
