City of Rocks Backcountry Byway improvements begin Monday (Jan. 10)

SHOSHONE - Reconstruction of the City of Rocks Backcountry Byway on the Elba-Almo Highway (milepost 0-4), 7.5 miles east of Malta will begin Monday (Jan. 10), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

The project will reconstruct 4.9 miles of roadway, creating a safer, smoother surface for the thousands of visitors who annually travel to the City of Rocks National Reserve, best known for its granite crag rock climbing.

While pipe culverts and bridge structures are being installed, traffic will detour on the 2800 South Road, 750 East Road and 2975 South Road. Motorists should expect delays of up to five minutes.

LeGrand Johnson Construction Co. of Logan, Utah is the contractor on this $3 million rehabilitation project, scheduled for completion in August.
