Motorists can expect return of third lane for Meridian Interchange off-ramp on westbound I-84 tonight (Dec. 10)
BOISE - To improve traffic flow, the Idaho Transportation Department will re-introduce westbound I-84 motorists to a third lane - a dedicated off-ramp lane - at the Meridian Interchange starting tonight (Thursday, Dec. 10).
Motorists had previously used three lanes until a lane was closed late last month to create a work zone as part of the Garrity to Meridian project. ITD reconfigured the work zone this week to improve traffic flow near the interchange by returning the lane for use.
Motorists are advised to use extra caution while traveling I-84 in this area. Two lanes in each direction, plus the dedicated westbound off-ramp lane, are open during the day.
At least one lane of traffic in each direction on I-84 is open between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekdays and between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The I-84 speed limit is 55 mph and the shoulders are restricted between the Garrity and Meridian interchanges.
The work is part of the Garrity to Meridian project, which will result in six lanes on I-84 and a median barrier between the Garrity and Meridian interchanges. The project is estimated to cost $113 million. It is expected to be complete in 2010.
The project is part of a series of improvements in the GARVEE Transportation Program, which uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvements.
ITD and the Idaho State Police warn motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for driving information on the state highway or interstate system.
