State maintenance crews will be working during the holidays
COEUR d'ALENE - State crews in northern Idaho will continue around-the-clock winter maintenance operations during the holidays, according to the Idaho Transportation Department. The safety of the traveling public is a top priority for the department.
In District One, which encompasses the five northern counties, the transportation department has 92 employees covering 1,846 lane miles of the state highway system. District Engineer Damon Allen says he is very impressed with the efforts to keep the department's service-oriented mission at the forefront.
"Our ability to provide around-the-clock service to the citizens of Idaho relies heavily on the remarkable commitment our employees have to their profession," he said. "They are dedicated to accomplishing much with little, and take great pride in the results."
State crews are working 12-hour shifts and cover a road section at least four times per day, more often during storms.
Motorists are urged to drive with caution at all times, but especially during severe weather conditions. Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges. Drivers can be cited for not following the Basic Rule driving reasonably and prudently for conditions.
Wearing a seat belt is one of the easiest safety precautions one can take. Also, children must be properly secured in a safety seat that is appropriate for their age and weight.
Before leaving home, check the 511 Traveler Services Web site at www.511.idaho.gov or dial 511. Reports are available on highway conditions, mountain passes and weather.
