Morning and evening commuters urged to exercise caution as temps dip and roads freeze
BOISE - As Treasure Valley temperatures drop below freezing and more vehicles use local highways and streets during the morning and evening commutes, motorists are reminded to use extra caution and slow down, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Snow may have thawed during the warmer temperatures Monday, but those wet areas on highways may freeze and become slick as the evening temperatures drop and likely will stay that way through the early morning hours.

"We put de-icer and abrasives (a sand-and-salt mixture) on the road this morning and plowed to remove slush  this afternoon," said ITD District 3 maintenance foreman Dan Bryant. "As conditions change, we adapt to provide for the safety of motorists."

Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady areas or bridges and overpasses. Take caution against black ice. Drive slower than the speed limit when conditions warrant and allow extra travel time.

Travelers are advised to check the 511 Traveler Services system on the Web at 511.idaho.gov or dial 511 for the latest highway conditions.
