U.S. 12 closes near Lolo Pass for avalanche mitigation
LEWISTON - U.S. 12 will close at 2 p.m. (PST) today for an avalanche control project near Lolo Pass, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
The east-west route connecting Lewiston and Missoula, Mont., will be closed from milepost 99 (Lowell) and milepost 160. The alternative route is Interstate 90 that crosses northern Idaho.
An ITD avalanche mitigation expert recommended the release of threatening snow as a preemptive measure to avert an uncontrolled avalanche and extended closure of the highway. Work is scheduled to take place Wednesday, and the highway could reopen late in the day, depending on weather and success of the work.
Heavy snow in the region makes slopes along the highway unstable and removal of the avalanches necessary to ensure safe driving conditions.
Snowstorms and steady winds continue to make travel difficult in most regions of Idaho.
Motorists are advised to use the 511 Traveler Services Web site (511.idaho.gov) or dial 5-1-1 for the most current highway conditions in Idaho. The Web site and telephone system are updated as conditions change.
