ITD law enforcement mobilizations catch more than impaired drivers
BOISE - Law enforcement mobilizations that target impaired drivers often lead to citations and arrests for other law violations.

A look at the Idaho Transportation Department's Nov. 21-30, 2008, impaired driving law enforcement mobilization shows that more people than impaired drivers were arrested.

According to statistics gathered by ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety, 31 law enforcement agencies statewide participated in the Thanksgiving holiday patrols that were funded through a federal grant administered by ITD.

Law enforcement officers made 314 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests over the nine-day period.

In addition to the DUI arrests, law enforcement officers also apprehended 62 fugitives, made 109 felony arrests, recorded 87 drug arrests and recovered 10 stolen vehicles. A number of additional citations also were issued during the mobilization.

-    360 seat belt citations
-    63 child safety seat citations
-    257 suspended license citations
-    717 uninsured motorist citations
-    2,135 speeding citations
-    36 reckless driving citations
-    64 underage alcohol citations

ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety works to reduce deaths and injuries resulting from traffic crashes by utilizing federal grant funds to address dangerous driving behaviors.
