Westbound I-84 lane restrictions expected this weekend near Orchard Interchange
BOISE - Motorists should expect I-84 westbound lane restrictions near the Orchard Interchange from Saturday night (Jan. 24) to Monday morning (Jan. 26) as a part of the Idaho Transportation Department's New York Canal construction project.

Weather permitting, the inside lane of westbound I-84 will be closed beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday night and will reopen Monday morning at 5 a.m. The closure is necessary to prepare a work zone needed to safely widen the westbound bridge over the New York canal.  Westbound traffic will be shifted slightly to the south to create the work zone.

ITD is widening the bridge over the New York Canal in preparation for future improvements to the Orchard Street Interchange and I-84.

The speed limit is 55 mph and highway shoulders are restricted in the project area. ITD advises motorists to be aware of workers and equipment.

The bridge-widening project is expected to be complete in spring 2009. It is part of a series of improvements in the GARVEE Transportation Program, which uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvements.

Concrete Placing Company Inc. of Boise is the contractor for the $4.6 million New York Canal Bridge project.

ITD and the Idaho State Police caution motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.Idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
