Idaho 21 through Canyon Creek is closed again for avalanche danger due to weather
BOISE -- Anticipated heavy rain last night led Idaho Transportation Department's avalanche team to close Idaho 21 through the avalanche-prone Canyon Creek section from Grandjean Junction to Banner Summit yesterday evening (Monday, March 2), at 6:30 p.m.  The forecast called for up to an inch of new precipitation.

The 13-mile section (milepost 93 to 106) may reopen today (Tuesday, March 3).

"This was more than we felt the snowpack could withstand," explained Mick Riffie, ITD avalanche specialist.  "It is likely that if temperatures drop as forecast, or less rain arrives than was forecast, the road could open again sometime on Tuesday."

Weather reports indicate more rain this week in Canyon Creek, which could mean further closures of the corridor.

ITD encourages motorists to check 511 before heading out to find out the latest conditions.  Dial 511, or go to www.511.itd.idaho.gov.  If your phone company does not support 511, call 1-888-IDA-ROAD.
