Lane restrictions imposed for Idaho 14 east of Grangeville because of wildfire
LEWISTON - Travel on Idaho 14 east of Grangeville will be curtailed because of a rapidly growing wildfire on state and federal land, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Idaho 14, the only major access to Elk City, will be reduced to a single lane from noon until 2 a.m. between mileposts 7 and 11 until further notice because of low visibility, potential road hazards and fire suppression efforts. A pilot car will lead traffic through the area during the restrictions.

Between 2 a.m. and noon, when the fire is expected to be less active, the route will remain open to two lanes, but that is subject to change if conditions warrant.

ITD crews will patrol the highway 24 hours per day during the fire threat. The narrow highway follows the South Fork of the Clearwater River in a steep canyon.

The Blackerby Fire started Tuesday evening on Idaho Department of Lands near the base of the Mount Idaho grade. It spread to the Nez Perce National Forest and expanded from 500 acres to 735 acres Wednesday night. Although no structures had been burned as of Wednesday morning, about 48 buildings were threatened. Local residents were ordered to evacuate Tuesday.

The fire is burning heavy timber about 18 road miles east of Grangeville. The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise reported only 5 percent containment late Thursday morning.

Motorists are urged to use extreme caution when traveling through the area and to expect delays when lanes are reduced. Drivers also should watch for fire suppression crews and vehicles operating in the area.
