Construction on Idaho 33 in Sugar City to begin Monday (April 27)
RIGBY ‑ Construction on Idaho 33 in Sugar City at the intersection of South Front Street and Center Street will begin Monday (April 27), the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced.

Crews will remove a hump in the road, which will level the roadway to improve safety and enhance the driving experience for motorists.

The project is scheduled for completion by May 7. Motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes. Travel will be reduced to one lane, with flaggers directing traffic through the work zone. Drivers may want to consider alternate routes.

The hump formerly was the beveled curve of Idaho 33 before the highway extended west to U.S. 20. ITD extended this highway (Center Street) in connection with the construction of the Sugar City half interchange on U.S. 20 in 2002.

By removing the hump, crews can regrade the intersection at Front and Center streets to match the existing geometry along Center Street, which is the primary east‑west roadway through Sugar City.

Crews will grind off the pavement and road base, lower the road surface and lay down pavement grindings in preparation for resurfacing the route this fall.

In September or October, ITD will repave Idaho 33 between 2nd East in Rexburg and the intersection of 7th East and Idaho 33 north of Sugar City. The re-leveling work will take place Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The transportation department urges motorists to drive carefully in and near construction zones. Orange signs with black letters or symbols and orange flags indicate construction activity ahead, even if the work cannot be observed immediately.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
