Ten Mile Interchange groundbreaking ceremony set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday (June 23)
BOISE - The public is invited to a community groundbreaking hosted by the Idaho Transportation Department at 3 p.m. on Tuesday (June 23) to celebrate the start of construction on the Ten Mile Interchange. The ceremony will be held in the southeast corner of the existing Ten Mile overpass.
Speakers for the afternoon event include Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter, Senate Transportation Committee Chairman John McGee, Meridian Mayor Tammy de Weerd and Idaho Transportation Board Chairman Darrell V Manning. The ceremony will take place at Ten Mile and Overland roads.
Members of the community are invited to bring a shovel to join in on the groundbreaking.
"This project represents a significant improvement for the residents of Meridian and for people throughout the Treasure Valley," said de Weerd.
The interchange, scheduled to be completed in early summer 2011, will be the first new exit on Interstate 84 since the Karcher Interchange opened in 2006. It will help reduce growing congestion at the Garrity and Meridian interchanges.
The new Ten Mile Overpass will span 200 feet across I-84 and will allow additional interstate lanes in each direction.
On- and off-ramps will connect with Ten Mile Road, which will be widened from two to four lanes with sidewalks and bicycle lanes. A single traffic signal will control all turning movements on the overpass.
Funding for the project comes from the GARVEE Transportation Program. The program uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvements.
To reach the ceremony from I-84, exit at Meridian Road (Exit 44) and travel south on Meridian Road. Turn west on Overland and watch for signs. The ceremony entrance will be on the right between Linder and Ten Mile roads.
