Emmett to get new "flashing yellow" traffic lights
EMMETT - Drivers heading into Emmett on Idaho 16 will soon see something a little different above the intersections at South Substation Road and a mile farther at South Johns Avenue. Instead of the traditional green ball allowing for left turn traffic, the Idaho Transportation Department is installing a newer signal configuration that features flashing yellow arrows.

Emmett is the latest location to get them with the installation happening overnight on July 22. If needed, the installation at the two intersections may extend to overnight July 23 as well.

Motorists in southern Idaho have already begun noticing the innovative traffic lights guiding the through intersections. ITD has installed the new signals at a few intersections in the Treasure Valley, and they also are being used in eastern Oregon and elsewhere across the country.

The most recent flashing arrow signal was installed at the intersection of 3rd and American Legion Boulevard in Mountain Home in December. The flashing yellow arrow means "proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic."

The signal has four intervals:
1.  Solid Red: Stop
2.  Solid Yellow: Be prepared - traffic change coming
3.  Flashing Yellow Arrow: Proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic
4.  Green Arrow: Represents a protected turn

If the signal detects that vehicles are not moving through the left-turn lane, a solid green arrow phase will follow, providing protected left-turn movements. The FYA signal is more efficient and improves safety. The signal also saves on motorists' fuel and time at the intersection.
