Westbound I-84 traffic will shift to temporary lanes near the Garrity Interchange this weekend

BOISE - Westbound Interstate 84 will be reduced to one lane overnight (10 p.m. - 7 a.m.) both Friday and Saturday (July 31 and Aug. 1) while the Idaho Transportation Department prepares the road for a construction-related traffic shift.

Starting Sunday morning (Aug. 2), westbound I-84 travelers will shift to temporary lanes between the Ten Mile and Black Cat overpasses. Motorists will return to the normal lanes at the Garrity Interchange.

The work is part of a project to widen I-84 to three lanes in both directions between the Garrity and Meridian interchanges.

East of the Ten Mile Overpass, nearly a mile of the third eastbound lane opened last week. An additional one-half mile of eastbound lane and two miles of the westbound lane are expected to open in mid-August.

West of the Ten Mile Overpass, construction will continue until late 2009. New lanes between Ten Mile Overpass and Black Cat Road will be completed next spring as a part of Ten Mile Interchange construction.

Construction is funded through the GARVEE Transportation Program, which uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvements.

ITD and the Idaho State Police caution motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
