U.S. 20 road work near Picabo to be suspended
SHOSHONE - All work on a road rehabilitation project near Picabo will be suspended until this fall, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

The planned construction includes a pavement rehabilitation involving Cement Recycled Asphalt Base Stabilization (CRABS) to increase the structural value of the section. Despite expectations for moist conditions in the area of Silver Creek, excessively wet conditions this spring increased soil moisture and caused severe soft spots in the road base that is complicating the CRABS process.

The soft spots encountered have been repaired. Nevertheless, moist soil conditions are still prevalent throughout the project leading to the decision to postpone the work.

"We considered several options to continue construction at this time but the realization that the wet conditions will continue to be an issue led us to the decision to suspend work at this time," Resident Engineer Thomas Brown said. "Conditions should be better when the crews return this fall."

The project includes rehabilitation of U.S. 20 between Gannett Road and the Silver Creek bridge east of Picabo (milepost 186 to 192) and an already completed bridge approach slab replacement at milepost 187. During the suspension of work the speed limit will be 55 mph through the construction zone. No other restrictions are currently in effect.

An expected return date has not been designated but advanced notice will be given to the public. Western Construction Inc. of Boise is the contractor for the project.

ITD and the Idaho State Police caution motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
