Ten Mile Overpass will be demolished overnight Friday (Dec. 11); I-84 traffic detoured to Franklin
BOISE - I-84 will be closed between the Garrity and Meridian
interchanges Friday night (Dec. 11)
while the Idaho Transportation Department demolishes the Ten Mile Overpass and
clears the way for a new interchange.
Weather
permitting, the demolition will begin at 10 p.m. Friday (Dec. 11). Work is
expected to be complete by 7 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 12).
Flaggers will detour interstate travelers to Franklin Road during this time. Click here for a map of the detour.
- Westbound motorists will exit at the Meridian Interchange and re-enter I-84 at the Garrity Interchange. The detour route will be Main Street to Franklin Road to Idaho Center Boulevard.
- Eastbound motorists will exit at the Garrity Interchange and re-enter I-84 at the Meridian Interchange. The detour route will be Idaho Center Boulevard to Franklin Road to Meridian Road.
The overpass is the last of three structures to be demolished on I-84 this year. The Vista and Orchard interchange bridges were demolished in October and November to make way for reconstructed interchanges.
In this case, however, a brand new interchange will be built. Ten Mile Road will be closed between Franklin and Overland roads for construction until summer 2011.
"Leaving the road closed allows the project to move along at a faster rate," said Dave Jones, Idaho Transportation Department District 3 engineer. "The faster we finish this project, the faster motorists can begin using the new interchange."
The new interchange will reduce congestion at the Meridian Interchange and the local road network.
On- and off-ramps will connect with Ten Mile Road, which will be widened to four lanes with sidewalks and bicycle lanes. A single traffic signal will control all turning movements on the overpass.
Funding for the project comes from the GARVEE Transportation Program, which uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvements.
