ITD reminds party goers to be safe and not drive impaired

BOISE - Keeping up with holiday season parties and celebrations may lead to unsafe choices, so the Idaho Transportation Department reminds party-goers to make a safe choice and not drive impaired.

Idaho law enforcement agencies are conducting overtime patrols statewide searching for and arresting drunk or impaired drivers through New Year's Day. ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety is providing funds through a federal grant for the extra patrol effort.

"ITD's goal is not one death, because every life counts," said Kevin Bechen, with ITD. "We're committed to doing everything we can to help keep families safe and whole. Smart choices save lives."

Last year, 96 people died in impaired-driving crashes on Idaho's highways.

Bechen offered tips to make the holiday party season safer.

* Whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate a sober driver before you leave and give that person your keys.

* If you are impaired, call a taxi or sober friend or family member to get you home safely. Many taxi services offer free or discounted rides to party-goers during the holiday season.

* Promptly report drunk drivers to law enforcement.

*
Wear your seat belt while in your car or use a helmet and protective gear when on a motorcycle. These are the best defenses against an impaired driver.

*
If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take his or her keys and help make other safe travel arrangements.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for the latest conditions on the state highway or interstate system.
