Community awareness meeting planned on McCammon interchange project
POCATELLO - The Idaho Transportation Department will conduct an informational meeting Wednesday to describe a project that will replace the Interstate 15 north interchange bridge at McCammon.
The community awareness session is part of a McCammon City Council meeting that starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 802 Front St. Anyone interested in the I-15B McCammon North Interchange (Merrill Road) Bridge Replacement Project is encouraged to attend.
The existing bridge at Exit 47 (Merrill Road) northwest of McCammon was built in 1963. ITD identified the structure for replacement in bridge inspection reports because of accelerated deterioration and a high volume of heavy truck traffic on U.S. 30. The span over I-15 also does not meet current height standards.
Construction plans include replacement of the existing two-lane structure with a four-lane bridge that has five-foot shoulders. After the first stage is complete, the existing bridge will be demolished and construction will begin on the second stage at about the same location as the old structure. A final closure pour will connect work done in the two earlier stages, completing the project.
The project also includes reconstruction of the I-15 southbound off ramp, southbound on ramp and northbound off ramps to increase traffic-handling capacity and improve safety.
Construction is planned to begin in spring 2011 and should continue through late 2012.
