UPDATE: Winter storms force cancellation of hazardous material shipments from INL on Friday (Jan. 22)
RIGBY ‑ Winter storms have prompted Idaho National Laboratory officials to cancel shipments of radioactive waste and radioactive research material from the laboratory on Friday (Jan. 22), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
Highways between Idaho Falls and Arco will not close as planned early Friday morning. Officials had arranged to close the highways between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. and again between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Friday to facilitate the shipments.
Lab officials will reschedule the shipments of hazardous material as early as next week, with additional convoys of trucks to transfer radioactive waste later this year.
For closure/construction information on state highways, visit the Idaho Traveler Services Web site at 511.idaho.gov, or dial 5-1-1 from phones within Idaho. Outside Idaho, dial toll‑free (888) 432‑7623. Reports are updated as conditions change.
