Statewide high visibility enforcement campaign catches more than impaired drivers
BOISE - Ensuring safe travel on Idaho's highways is a prime reason for impaired driving high visibility enforcement campaigns, but a recent Christmas/New Year's traffic safety effort shows that more people than just impaired drivers are caught breaking laws and displaying dangerous driving behaviors.

Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Operations and Safety works to reduce deaths and injuries from traffic crashes by using federal funds to address dangerous driving behaviors. This effort is part of the department's commitment to achieve a goal of zero deaths on Idaho's highways.

In addition to the emphasis on DUI arrests, law enforcement officers apprehended 183 fugitives, made 269 felony arrests, recorded 236 drug arrests and recovered 12 stolen vehicles. A number of additional citations also were issued during the campaign.

-    429 seat belt citations
-    21 child safety citations
-    433 suspended license citations
-    1,468 uninsured motorist citations
-    2,028 speeding citations
-    71 reckless driving citations
-    125 underage alcohol possession citations

Law enforcement officers also made 446 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests across the state during the 21-day period (Dec. 14, 2009, to Jan. 3, 2010).

According to statistics gathered by the Office of Highway Operations and Safety, 61 agencies statewide participated in the holiday patrols that were funded through a federal grant administered by ITD.

The next statewide impaired driving enforcement campaign is planned for March 12-22.
