Idaho 21 remains closed this morning for continuing avalanche danger
BOISE - The Idaho Transportation Department cautions motorists that Idaho 21 remains closed this morning (Monday, March 8) between Grandjean Junction and
Banner Summit because of continuing avalanche danger. The 11-mile stretch of highway was
originally closed Friday at 7:30 p.m. due to avalanche danger.
"Despite the sun and lack of snow seen in the Treasure Valley," ITD Lead
Avalanche Forecaster Bill Nicholson said, "this year's weak snowpack combined
with the stress of high temperatures has created a considerable avalanche
hazard."
A cold front is expected later in the week in that area, which should help stabilize the slide region. In the interim, ITD's Avalanche Forecast Office
will be working to bring about a safe opening of the highway.
Motorists are encouraged to check the state's Traveler Information Service at
511.idaho.gov for conditions.
