Freeze-thaw cycles prompt speed, weight restrictions on Idaho 87 starting today
RIGBY ‑ Freeze‑thaw cycles are prompting speed and weight restrictions on Idaho 87 starting today (Tuesday, March 23), the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced.

Pavement deterioration is caused as roads soften from thawing in and beneath the pavement with the onset of warmer temperatures. Speed and weight restrictions reduce that damage.

Speed will be restricted to 30 mph and ITD will not issue overweight permits on this route, which runs between its junction with U.S. 20 north of Island Park and the Montana state line at Raynolds Pass.

The transportation department placed restrictions on Idaho 22, which runs between its junction with Idaho 33 nine miles northeast of Howe and Dubois on March 8. The speed limit for trucks on this two‑lane road is 30 mph, with a weight limit of 16,000 pounds per axle or legal weights, whichever is less.

On March 15, ITD restricted speed to 30 mph and announced it would not issue overweight permits on three routes:

‑ Idaho 47, between Ashton and 1500 North in Fremont County (milepost 1‑7).
‑ Idaho 32, which runs between its junction with Idaho 33 and Ashton (milepost 0‑28).
‑ Idaho 33, between Newdale and its junction with Idaho 32 (milepost 106‑131).

ITD also would not issue overweight permits on two other routes:

‑ Idaho 33, between Sage Junction and Rexburg (milepost 59‑79)
‑ U.S. 26, between Ririe and Wyoming (milepost 349‑406).

Speed and weight restrictions do not apply to emergency vehicles and school buses.

Restrictions will be in place until further notice.

Speed and weight restrictions are posted on the Idaho Traveler Services Web site and phone system: 511.idaho.gov or 5‑1‑1 from phones within the state. Outside Idaho, dial toll‑free (888) 432‑7623. Information is updated as conditions change.
