Idaho State Highway 21 to close in "Avalanche Alley" for slide threat tonight (Monday, March 29)
BOISE - The Idaho Transportation Department cautions motorists that Idaho 21 will close at 7 p.m. tonight (Monday, March 29) between Grandjean Junction and
Banner Summit due to avalanche danger. Thus far, the 11-mile stretch of highway - known as "Avalanche Alley" - has closed only about 6.5 days this winter season, a significant improvement over past winters.
"A weather system is due to come through and dump up to two feet of snow," ITD Lead
Avalanche Forecaster Bill Nicholson said. "Any rapid change this time of year can be extremely hazardous, especially rapid snowfall followed by rapid warming."
A cold front is expected later in the week in that area, which should help stabilize the slide region. In the meantime, ITD's Avalanche Forecast Office will be working to bring about a safe opening of the highway.
Motorists are encouraged to check the state's Traveler Information Service at 511.idaho.gov for conditions.
