Malta roadway, sidewalk construction beginning Tuesday
MALTA - The reconstruction of Idaho 81 combined with the addition of sidewalks in the town of Malta is expected to begin Tuesday, May 5, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Roadway reconstruction will begin at the junction of Idaho 81 and Idaho 77 in Malta and extend north for about 10 miles. The separate sidewalk installation project - which will include sidewalk, curb, and gutter - was added to the road work due to the proximity of location and time frame of work.

Crews will begin with the installation of sidewalk near the Raft River schools on the west side of Malta and continue east to the junction of Idaho 81 and 77 (Main Street and Center Street ) then north to 1st Street. Crews also will begin with the roadwork mid-May by milling off a layer of asphalt before paving a fresh layer of asphalt.

Before completion of the roadway construction project, the entire section will be overlaid with a chip-seal coat. The combined projects are scheduled to be complete by mid-June, but could be delayed because of weather.

Drivers are reminded to use extreme caution in the work zone and near the schools, being mindful of workers and equipment. Drivers are urged to follow all traffic control signs and be prepared for flaggers and lane closures throughout the construction project.

Johnson Excavation Inc., of Inkom, is the contractor for the $1.7 million federally funded project.

ITD and the Idaho State Police warn motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
