EAGLE ROAD: Railroad crossing replacement rescheduled for overnight Friday, daytime Saturday
BOISE
- Crews will complete work to replace
the railroad crossing between Franklin Road and Pine Street on Eagle Road
(Idaho 55) overnight Friday and end by mid-afternoon Saturday. The Idaho Transportation Department advises that this is being done to accommodate Meridian Dairy Days and reduce interference with drivers going
to and from that event Saturday evening.
The work was
originally planned to occur overnight both Friday and Saturday, but crews will
instead work one long shift to get it done before Saturday evening.
Crews will start setting traffic control at 8 p.m. Friday. Motorists are
encouraged to use an alternate route during this work.
The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph and one lane of traffic will be open
through the work zone. It will stay at 35 mph but two lanes will be open in
each direction by early Saturday morning (6 a.m. or 7 a.m.).
The electronic message signs at
southbound Eagle Road and eastbound on I-84 at Locust Grove will advise
motorists of the closure.
Boise Valley Railroad will be replacing the decades-old crossing, which includes also removing the old tracks and planking, excavating around and replacing the
underlying ties, placement of the new tracks, splice-welding the new tracks
together, setting the grade of the new tracks and installation of the pre-cast
steel-edged concrete planking to replace the old rubber planking.
The old
rubber planking outside of the rails also has rutted over time. Crews need to
replace the crossing or the ruts in the old planking will eventually compromise
the new pavement. Crews also will apply temporary patching to the roadway
leading into the tracks.
The contractor is planning on returning to mill and repave the permanent transitions
to the crossing the following weekend (June 25-27). The entire project should
be completed except final clean-up items by the end of the month.
Central Paving Co. Inc. of Boise is the contractor on the $1.35 million
project.
