No traffic restrictions over Fourth of July weekend at Horseshoe Bend Hill spot repair on Idaho 55
BOISE - To accommodate anticipated heavy weekend travel for the Independence Day holiday, ITD announces
that there will be no traffic restrictions on Idaho 55 for the ongoing
Horseshoe Bend Hill spot repair on the north side of the summit. There will be
no restrictions in that area from June 30-July 6.
For the Fourth of July weekend, all four lanes will be open,
although speed limit reductions (45 mph) will remain in effect because of the
abrupt edge on the centerline of the road. To alert motorists, candlesticks (thin orange cylindrical sticks) also will be
placed along the abrupt area and warning signs will be used.
Traffic control will resume on July 6, with the two
northbound lanes restricted. ITD will separate the work zone from traffic with
concrete guardrail.
Crews are repairing a slight depression on Idaho 55 on the
north side of Horseshoe Bend Hill. They will shore up an area about 400 feet
long near the Horseshoe View Subdivision at milepost 60.4, which is about
halfway down from the summit on the Horseshoe Bend side of the hill. The work is
expected to be complete in July.
This section of roadway has settled about 18 inches since it
was paved in the early 1980s. Crews will grind the pavement off, add about
1,500 cubic yards of road base to restore the road level, re-compact it and
pave over the new surface.
The damaged area extends across both directions of travel.
This $22,000 project will be done by State forces, with assistance from Western
Construction for the rotomilling and Idaho Sand & Gravel on the paving.
Knife River is contracted to supply the road base material for compaction.
