Seal coating of Idaho Falls streets to start Monday (July 19)
RIGBY ‑ Seal coating of Idaho Falls streets will start Monday (July 19), the Idaho Transportation Department announced. A seal coat protects the existing roadway against water damage, adds traction to the surface and prolongs its life.

Crews will seal coat various city arterial and collector roads, including portions of Old Butte Road, Pancheri Drive, Grandview Drive, Skyline Drive, Science Center Drive, Anderson Street, Lincoln Road, 1st Street, Holmes Avenue and Hitt Road (Click here for a map).

During construction, motorists can expect slight delays as crews spray liquid asphalt on the highway and spread a layer of crushed rock over it. Crews also will spray a light coat of asphalt over the crushed rock to help lock it in place.

Travel will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with flaggers directing traffic through the work zones. The speed limit in work areas will be reduced to 25 mph.

Work is expected to take place between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the job estimated to be completed in early August.

Drivers should watch for construction workers, equipment and obey all traffic signs. During construction, locals can access businesses or homes along the construction zones.

Later this summer, crews will apply pavement markings to newly sealed streets.

Sponsored by the city of Idaho Falls, the seal‑coating contracts total more than $1 million. They will be administered by the transportation department using federal funds. The contractor for the work is HK Contractors Inc., of Idaho Falls.
