Seal-coat project to restrict travel on I-84 beginning Monday, U.S. 93 on Thursday
JEROME - Traffic on Interstate 84 and U.S. 93 in Jerome County will be slowed on two commuter routes next week with the start of seal-coat operations, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
A seal-coat project on I-84, from Jerome to the U.S. 93 junction (mileposts 166 to 173), will begin Monday morning (Aug. 16). The seal coat will help preserve and extend the life of the roadway, which was reconstructed in 2007. Crews will move the operation to U.S. 93, between I-84 and the Idaho 25 junction east of Jerome, as early as Thursday (Aug. 19). Lane closures and loose gravel will restrict the speed of drivers.
The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph through both construction zones. Lane restrictions will be in effect during the work hours, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Speed restrictions will remain in place until loose gravel is swept from the roadway and the surface is restriped.
I-84 will be reduced to one lane in each direction as crews coat the roadway with rubberized oil and rock chips. Traffic in the U.S. 93 section will be reduced to one lane, and a pilot car will lead traffic through the work zone.
Following posted speed limits will reduce the risk of windshield damage caused by the loose gravel. Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route if possible.
Drivers should use caution when approaching the work zone and follow all temporary speed limits and lane closure signs. Watch for crews and equipment when driving in the work zone. ITD appreciates the patience and cooperation of drivers traveling in the affected areas.
Kloepfer Inc., of Paul, is the contractor for the $1.08 million seal-coat project. The contract includes seal coat operations in Buhl and Twin Falls, but those start dates have not been determined.
