Fifth Street to be closed at Overland Avenue Tuesday and Wednesday nights
BURLEY - The intersection of Fifth Street and Overland Avenue will have closures on Tuesday and Wednesday nights (Aug. 24 & 25) and will be greatly restricted during the day on Wednesday, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

The east half of the Fifth Street intersection will be closed to traffic on Tuesday and Wednesday nights as crews complete roadway excavation work through the crossroads. Fifth Street east of the intersection also will be restricted to only one lane during the day on Wednesday.

The restrictions are due to the difficulty of working around underground utilities buried in the intersection. Crews will be working to excavate and reconstruct the roadway through the intersection. Crews will complete the sub-base before the intersection can be opened to two-way traffic.

The road will be closed from approximately 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. overnight each night. Flaggers will control the intersection and all traffic traveling on Fifth Street east of Overland Avenue. Drivers may encounter long lines of traffic and are asked to use alternate routes if possible.

The intersection will remain open to north-south traffic without interruption and Fifth Street west of Overland will continue to be open.

The Overland Avenue reconstruction project will feature a wider road and enhanced turn bays. The roadway will include a storm-water collection system, restructured and improved business access, the addition of bicycle lanes and a new signal at Third Street.

Knife River Corporation Northwest of Boise is the contractor for the $3.13 million reconstruction. The project is scheduled for completion by early October.
