11th Avenue Bridge opens to traffic today, 29 days ahead of schedule
BOISE - The 11th Avenue Bridge over Interstate 84 in Nampa opened to traffic this morning (Thursday, Sept. 2), nearly a month ahead of schedule.
Crews were allowed a five-month window to build the bridge, then pledged to complete their work before Labor Day. Today's opening means they beat the contractual deadline by 29 days. Click here to access ITD's Facebook page and pictures of the completed bridge.
Some additional work, including minor clean-up and final construction activities are anticipated to be complete by mid-September. Until then, minor traffic impacts may be expected.
Intermittent overnight lane reductions will be necessary on I-84 tonight, near the bridge, for both east- and westbound traffic beginning at 10 p.m. This work will be complete by 5 a.m. Friday morning (Sept. 3). Crews will remove brackets and temporary structures used to support the 11th Avenue Bridge during the construction process.
The 11th Avenue Bridge closed to all traffic on May 11 so that crews could begin the demolition process, followed by reconstruction of the new bridge. Reconstruction of the bridge was required to allow the addition of one lane in each direction on I-84 between Franklin Boulevard and Garrity Boulevard. That project is under way and is scheduled to be complete by early summer 2012.
The project added street lights, sidewalk, curb and gutter on the west side of the bridge. Fence was added to both sides of the bridge.
McAlvain Civil Constructors is the contractor on the $4.1 million 11th Avenue Bridge project.
The bridge reconstruction and I-84 widening projects are among several interstate improvements occurring in an 18-mile stretch of I-84, funded by the GARVEE Transportation Program. The program uses proceeds from Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle Bonds.
