U.S. 12 Arrow Bridge opening advanced to Oct. 9

LEWISTON - The rehabilitation of the U.S. 12 Arrow Bridge will be completed three weeks earlier than planned due to an agreement between the project's contractor and a shipper, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

An agreement between Emmert International, the shipper of four oversized loads of refinery equipment proposed to be transported on U.S. 12, and McAlvain Construction, the contractor on the project, will move the completion date to Oct. 9.

In bidding construction contracts, the transportation department gives contractors a window of time to complete a project. The contractor is allowed to use that time to maximize its crews and equipment as long as the transportation department approves its plan.

The contractor is using double shifts and working seven days a week to accelerate the bridge opening.

The Arrow Bridge is a two-lane bridge with a concrete surface. It is 1,248 feet long and spans both the Clearwater River and railroad tracks on U.S. 12 east of Lewiston. Rehabilitation of the bridge began in April. The contractor still needs to remove the concrete surface from one lane of the bridge and pour a new deck. Cost for the project is $1.2 million.
