Speed reduction replacing four-way stop at Timmerman Junction
SHOSHONE - Plans to create a four-way stop at the intersection of U.S. 20 and Idaho 75 in Blaine County have been replaced with plans to lower the speed limit and narrow lanes, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. If successful, the interim measure will eliminate the need for a four-way stop.

ITD will reduce the speed limit on Idaho 75 to 45 mph for about one-half mile in each direction from the intersection, commonly referred to as Timmerman Junction, as soon as weather permits. In addition to the new speed zone, narrowed lanes and rumble strips will be installed at the intersection in the spring.

The decision to reduce the speed limit, install additional safety features and delay the four-way stop follows concerns raised by Blaine County officials. ITD will continue to closely monitor traffic statistics at Timmerman Junction and be prepared to make additional modifications if needed.

"With assurances from Blaine County Sheriff Walt Femling to enforce the speed reduction, we believe this can be an effective measure in reducing the severity and number of vehicle crashes," District Engineer Devin Rigby said. "This doesn't change our level of concern for safety at the intersection. ITD will continue working for the best solution to reduce collisions at Timmerman Junction."

ITD crews will install the new speed limit and warning signs as soon as weather conditions allow in the coming weeks. Additional safety features to be installed in the spring include upgrading the flashing beacons, extension of a no-passing zone and installation of larger "Cross Traffic Does Not Stop" signs on U.S. 20.

ITD will continue to pursue a long-range plan for reconstruction and improvement of the intersection. The long-term fix will require an environmental reevaluation of the area and completion of project development before major reconstruction of the intersection can be completed. Improvements, however, remain subject to available funding.

ITD and the Idaho State Police caution motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
