Avalanche-prone stretch of Idaho 21 remains closed
BOISE - The 12-mile stretch of Idaho 21 between the Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit remains closed today (Tuesday, Jan. 18) as crews continue cleaning up in the aftermath of avalanches, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
The route originally closed at 11 a.m. Friday because rain was falling on top of the 17 inches
of snow that had accumulated in the area over the previous days, creating a rising
avalanche hazard due to instability. Six more inches of snow fell in the area over the weekend, and 10 large slides came down on the roadway.
Crews are working to clear two lanes for motorists. The snow and debris is 10 feet deep in some spots - on both sides of the highway. The hazard of new avalanche activity is moderate.
