Idaho 75 speed reduction at Timmerman Junction beginning this week
SHOSHONE - The speed limit will be lowered to 45 mph Tuesday (Jan. 24) on Idaho 75 near its intersection with U.S. 20 -- commonly known as the Timmerman Junction -- in Blaine County. The speed limit will be reduced for about one-half mile north and south of the intersection, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

The speed limit on that segment currently is 55 mph. A two-way stop will be maintained for east-west traffic on U.S. 20.

ITD crews will install the speed limit and warning signs on Tuesday; advanced warning beacons will be installed later this week. Drivers are asked to use caution in the area while crews install the signs and to be aware of the lower speed limit.

In addition to the new speed zone, narrowed lanes and rumble strips will be installed at the intersection when weather allows this spring. Additional safety features will include upgrading the flashing beacons at the intersection, extension of a no-passing zone and installation of larger "Cross Traffic Does Not Stop" signs on U.S. 20.

The decision to reduce the speed limit and install additional safety features follows several vehicle crashes in recent years. ITD will continue to closely monitor traffic statistics at Timmerman Junction and will make additional modifications if needed.

ITD also will continue to pursue a long-range plan for reconstruction and improvement of the intersection. The long-term solution will require an environmental re-evaluation and completion of project development before major reconstruction can be completed. Improvements, however, remain subject to available funding.

ITD and the Idaho State Police caution motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
