Preparing for road construction season in southern Idaho
SHOSHONE - As winter gives way to spring, southern Idaho drivers can look forward to warmer temperatures and the roadway construction season. Several 2010 projects will conclude in the next few months, and new roadway preservation projects will begin, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

With the majority of the upcoming projects located in rural areas of the Magic and Wood River valleys, the concern for many drivers will be on what impact construction will have on daily commutes.

To the north of Twin Falls, U.S. 93 will be the site of a pair of projects with the installation of a traffic signal at Golf Course Road and reconstruction of the roadway at the junction with Interstate 84.

Farther north, road resurfacing on U.S. 93 in Jerome County and on Idaho 75 south of Bellevue will cause some delays later this summer. Other resurfacing projects in the Wood River and Sawtooth valleys will take place later this year between Hailey and Ketchum, and between Galena Summit and Stanley.

Finally, a handful of projects will keep Interstate 84 and Interstate 86 active. Reconstruction of I-84 west from Wendell will take much of the summer, as will the eastbound lanes of I-86 to Raft River. I-84 will also see pavement preservation projects between Twin Falls and Burley, and two areas between the Salt Lake Interchange and the Utah border.

Projects that started in 2010 are nearing completion. Crews are still active on Washington Street in Twin Falls, Slate Creek Bridge north of Stanley, and a pair of canal bridges in eastern Twin Falls County.

Drivers are reminded to use caution when traveling through any construction zone. Watch for people and equipment, and be patient with workers and other drivers.
