Bicyclists reminded to use caution when crossing Mores Creek Bridge
BOISE - As the weather improves, the number of cyclists on Idaho 21 increases. It is a beautiful ride, but bicyclists need to be aware of traffic control in construction work zones, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
On Monday (March 14), a pair of bicyclists took too long to cross the Idaho 21 Mores Creek Bridge over Lucky Peak Reservoir, creating a safety hazard for themselves and drivers.
The temporary traffic signal in place during the project is timed to allow a bicyclist or driver traveling 20 mph or faster to completely traverse the bridge before the signal turns green for approaching traffic. However, when a bicyclist waits too long on the bridge itself, the light turns green on the other end. This allows oncoming cars onto the single-lane bridge, creating a significant safety hazard. Such was the case on Monday. The bicyclists put themselves in a dangerous situation. Luckily, no one was hurt.
Motorists are impatient and often run the red light. ITD asks that the public respect safety by waiting until the light turns green and obeying the speed limit. Cyclists also need to be aware and keep up the pace on the bridge for their own safety.
"This could result in a serious accident," said ITD project manager Dana Weiss. "ITD and the contractor (RSCI, of Meridian) want people to know that this kind of activity could jeopardize safety. It hasn't yet been an issue, but the potential is there."
The $2.8 million project to upgrade the bridge has been under way since mid-December 2010. The bridge deck is being repaved and structural upgrades
made to the bridge and foundation.
