I-84 to be repaired in 12-mile section east of Boise in June

BOISE - A project to correct severe pavement deficiencies on I-84's eastbound lanes in a problem section between Boise and Mountain Home is expected to begin in June, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. The project, near the Ada/Elmore County line, is expected to last four to five months.

Pavement in that stretch was first constructed in 1959. It received an overlay in 1961, another overlay in 1989, and seal coats in 1986 and 2002. ITD maintenance forces did some blade patching (a maintenance technique for repairing  an asphalt surface) last fall to extend the roadway use until a permanent fix could be applied in this project.

Signs were installed last fall asking trucks to move left to preserve the pavement in the right-hand lanes.

A concrete overlay will be applied beginning at milepost 70, which is about seven miles east of the Blacks Creek Rest Area on I-84 (near the Mayfield Exit), and extending east to milepost 82, about eight miles east of the Simco Road junction with the freeway. About two inches of the existing surface will be milled off, and about 10 inches of new concrete will be added. The on- and off-ramps at both interchanges will also receive new pavement.

The project will require crossovers and two-way traffic on the westbound lanes during the work.
