I-84 shoulder closures will begin April 7 between Cole, Broadway interchanges

BOISE - The Idaho Transportation Department has eliminated a major eastbound detour on Interstate 84 this month, but asks motorists to drive with caution during shoulder closures that begin at 10 p.m. Thursday (April 7).

Shoulders will be closed between Cole and Orchard until the week of April 11. The shoulder closures will move to the Orchard and Vista areas next week.

Shoulders will be closed between Vista and Broadway in mid- to late April.

ITD is paving two new eastbound lanes on I-84 between Cole and Broadway. The original construction plans called for a springtime detour for eastbound motorists.

"The contractor and ITD worked together on a proposal that reduces delays for eastbound traffic and will allow us to open the new westbound lanes earlier than expected this spring," said ITD Project Engineer Dana Weiss.

Motorists should also expect intermittent east- and westbound I-84 lane restrictions between Cole/Overland and Broadway interchanges through the month of April. Restrictions will be from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Construction trucks are entering and exiting the work zone at the Orchard, Vista and Broadway interchanges.

The restrictions are part of a project to widen I-84 to eight lanes between the Cole and Broadway interchanges. Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2011.
