Exit 40 near American Falls to close for interchange construction May 15
AMERICAN FALLS - A project to replace the Interstate 86 interchange at Exit 40 near American Falls is scheduled to resume May 15, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Western Construction Co., of Boise, began working on the $6.8 million project in 2010 in preparation for demolition of the existing bridge over I-86 and rebuilding the interchange.

Crews will begin setting up traffic control on May 15; the interchange is expected to close on May 15 and remain closed until July 17.

The contractor will demolish and remove the bridge over I-86 in two phases, each of which will require about three nights to complete. Interstate traffic will be diverted to the off- and on-ramps during the nighttime demolition. During daylight hours, traffic will return to normal on the interstate.

Crews will begin on the south half of the existing structure and then move to the north half of the bridge. Demolition work will take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Idaho 39, which provides access to north of Exit 40 and American Falls, will be closed during the project, and traffic will be rerouted through Exit 36, about four miles to the southwest. Access to areas south for Exit 40 will be rerouted through Exit 44 about four miles to the northeast. Motorists should watch for signs designating alternative routes.

The project will lengthen the on- and off ramps and provide more clearance for the bridge, bringing it into compliance with federal standards.
