Ride a bicycle to work Friday for National Bike to Work Day
BOISE - If you're thinking about bicycling to work more often, join other Idahoans who share the same thought and try it during National Bike to Work Day on Friday (May 20).
Idaho ranks near the top of states for bicycles used as a primary means to commute to work, according to American Community Survey (ACS) 2009 U.S. Census Bureau data.
The Gem State is ranked fourth nationwide among all states for bicycle commuting. Only Oregon, Montana and Colorado have more bicyclists making daily commutes.
"Overall, the census data shows that bicycling to work is becoming more popular," said Maureen Gresham, ITD bicycle and pedestrian coordinator. "The benefits of bicycling to work for just a few days each week are better health, less traffic congestion and cleaner air."
The ACS survey of selected states shows that more than three-quarters of bicycle commutes to work take from 10 minutes or less to no more than 30 minutes.
"Sometimes a commute may seem too long for a bike, so consider using public transportation or even driving part of the way, then traveling by bicycle to your work destination," Gresham advised.
