Seal coat projects in the Mini-Cassia area begin Tuesday (July 12)

SHOSHONE - Sections of Idaho 27 from Oakley to Paul will receive seal coats next week, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. Seal coats prolong the life of highways and provide better traction for motorists.

Paul to Burley (mileposts 24-26) will be seal-coated beginning Tuesday (July 12); Burley to Oakley (mileposts 0-21) will be seal-coated beginning Wednesday (July13) and a two-mile section of downtown Burley (U.S. 30/Idaho 27), south of the Overland Bridge will be seal-coated beginning Sunday (July 17).

Flaggers and pilot cars will direct motorists through the work zones. Delays of 10-15 minutes can be expected. The speed limit on Idaho 27 will be reduced in some sections depending on surface conditions. Crews will work weekdays, though occasional work may be necessary on weekends.

Motorists are reminded to drive slowly and keep a safe following distance from other vehicles to reduce risk of windshield damage.

Seal-coat projects begin with a layer of asphalt and then a cover coat of gravel. The surface is rolled, then broomed to remove excess gravel. Two to three days later, a light fog coat is added to seal the surface, and temporary lane markers are placed. Final striping takes place later.

Work is expected to be complete by late July. Kloepfer, Inc. of Paul, Idaho, is the project contractor of this and three other seal coat projects planned for later this summer. The total cost of the seal coats is about $995,000.
