Motorists may experience significant delays through Sand Creek Byway project from major traffic revision

COEUR D’ALENE – Motorists travelling northbound on U.S. 95/Idaho 200 at Sandpoint may experience significant delays as a major traffic revision is under way on the Sand Creek Byway project, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Motorists will access the new 91-meter bridge at the northern interchange by using the newly completed clover leaf on-ramp. The bridge will be one-lane, one-way traffic.

Southbound traffic on U.S. 95 has been reduced to one lane at the intersection. Motorists will be able to turn left or right, but there will be no merge lane. Northbound traffic coming from Sandpoint has also been reduced to one lane.

The new traffic signals will be used in a temporary mode to control some of the traffic movements. Other movements will be controlled by stop signs. Flaggers will also be initially used to guide motorists through the work zone area.

Crews are working to adjust signal timing and other factors that will help alleviate the back-up in traffic at the intersection.

The speed limit will remain the same - 35 mph.

The traffic revision is necessary to complete the intersection and mitigation requirements at the north end of the project.

The contractor for this $98 million project is Parsons RCI, of Sumner, Wash. The project is expected to be complete by fall 2012.
