Paving on U.S. 93 and lane closure on I-84 begin Friday

JEROME – Drivers on both U.S. 93 and Interstate 84 will need to be prepared for shifting traffic control as paving near the junction of those highways begins later this week, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Crews recently completed concrete paving on the southbound lanes of U.S. 93 and are prepared to begin asphalt paving of the roadway, shoulders and median. Included in this phase of paving will be an approximately one-mile section of eastbound I-84 near the U.S. 93 overpass as well as the eastbound on- and off-ramps at Exit 173.

Beginning Friday (Sept. 30), paving of the shoulder and roadway will begin at the northern portion of the project limits. Depending on progress and weather, the paving will then move to eastbound I-84. Traffic will be reduced to one lane as crews mill and pave a portion of the roadway for verification testing.

Milling and paving of eastbound I-84 and corresponding ramps is expected to take place Tuesday through Friday (Oct. 4-7). Drivers should be aware of shifting traffic patterns and narrow lanes on I-84 and the ramps. Traffic exiting I-84 will be required to stop at the traffic signal at times during the paving operation.

The paving crew will also be completing road surface in the median during the same time at which time traffic will be shifted to the outside lanes. Drivers should be prepared for changing traffic patterns throughout the next week as different areas of the project receive final work.

Drivers are asked to be prepared for delays and use caution through the construction zone. Use of an alternate route is encouraged. Traffic will remain in one lane in each direction until all portions of construction are complete, including guardrail installation, striping and shoulder work.

Knife River Corporation Northwest, of Boise, is the contractor for the $5.2 million rehabilitation project.
