Winter maintenance activities in high gear on state highways in the five northern counties

COEUR d’ALENE – Winter maintenance operations on state highways in the northern panhandle have moved into high gear with the recent storm activity in the region, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

ITD considers winter maintenance to be a fundamental service for the safety of the traveling public. The department will plow roads day or night during a storm or winter event that threatens public safety.

On some secondary routes, routine, non-emergency winter maintenance activities may be deferred to the next scheduled shift.  Primary routes, such as Interstate 90 and U.S. 95, will continue to be fully maintained as they have been in previous winters.

District 1, which covers the five northern counties, has been able to maintain a steady level of service despite declining revenue and personnel budgets, through innovative approaches, increased efficiencies and improvements in technology.

The safety of the traveling public and winter maintenance operations remain the highest priority for the department.
