Highway camera at Gilmore Summit on Idaho 28 back online
RIGBY - A highway camera at Gilmore Summit on Idaho 28, out of commission for the last month, is back online, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
The camera, about 16 miles south of Leadore at milepost 73, lost cell service Dec. 21 when AT&T's signal failed. The wireless communications provider tried to re-establish signal strength but decided in mid-January it could no longer provide service.
ITD now uses a Verizon signal to make the images available. Highway cameras enable drivers to see near real-time images of the highway day or night.

Cameras are Webcams (cameras that transmit images through the Internet). Images appear on the Idaho Traveler Services Web site known as 511. Information on road closures, construction delays, mountain passes and trucking requirements also is available on 511.idaho.gov.
Webcams may include infrared technology, so images are visible at night as well as during the day and are updated every 15 minutes.
Most Webcams are linked to the transportation department’s Road Weather Information System (RWIS), situated at strategic locations along state highways.
In addition to images of highways and prevailing conditions, the stations collect and electronically relay information on air temperature, wind speed and direction, precipitation, visibility, and relative humidity.
The transportation department has 85 RWIS locations, with 20 in District 6 (eastern Idaho). Upgrades or supplements to existing sites are planned. Additional stations will be installed as funding allows. Increasing the number of RWIS stations is part of a program to better inform maintenance workers and the traveling public.
