Drilling for bridge foundation investigation in Snake River begins Tuesday

BURLEY – Crews will be drilling in the Snake River along I-84 near the Declo interchange beginning Tuesday (May 1) in preparation for design of future replacement bridges at the crossing, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

The drilling is not expected to impact traffic on the bridges.

The drilling contractor, Crux Subsurface Inc. of Spokane Valley, Wash., will be mobilizing the barge and drill rig on Monday, closing the boat ramp northeast of the bridges, and start two weeks of drilling on Tuesday. The contractor will be drilling 20 holes in the river bottom to assist in the design of the bridge foundations.

The drilling is part of the early stages of design to replace the twin Snake River bridges that carry I-84. Replacement of the west-bound bridge is scheduled to begin in 2015 with the east-bound bridge to
follow. Each bridge will be wider but follow the same alignment as the current structures.

The barge is being used since the bridge is not wide enough to facilitate both the drill rig and traffic. Drivers will see the drill rig directly in the area of both bridges during the work.
