UPDATE: Project on I-84 starts at Mountain Home Friday morning, heading east

BOISE - A 25-mile repair and resurfacing of Interstate 84 from Mountain Home to Hammett begins Friday morning (May 4), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Crews are starting work from milepost 90 and heading east toward Hammett, meaning the eastbound travel lane will be closed. They are working a 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. schedule in order to arrive in Hammett by Sunday evening or Monday morning and start back westbound in the travel lanes.

The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph in lane-closure areas when workers are present. Lane closures will be removed and speed limit returned to 75 mph overnight.

NOTE: Tomorrow, May 4, a funeral procession for a fallen soldier is anticipated to pass through the project around noon. The contractor will cease operations (and if possible remove the lane closure) to show respect for the procession.

Work will follow a sunup-to-sundown schedule. The project is expected to finish by early July.

The overall project, on both sides of the highway, involves the replacement of several joint seals, extensive crack sealing and the replacement of deteriorated concrete slabs. It also involves the application of sealant to shoulders to protect the surface against weather and water damage and prevent additional cracking.

One lane will typically be closed in the immediate project area, and although closures may be three miles in length, the intent will be to limit overnight closures to about a half-mile at a time. In some areas of slab replacement, lanes will remain closed two to three days. Daily work operations will be within lane closures varying in length based on the contractor’s daily progress.

Concrete slab replacements, usually two to three days in duration, will be performed throughout May.

A 14-foot width-restriction will be in place when work is occurring in the travel lanes. With advanced notice to the project inspector via ITD's Ports of Entry, wider loads of up to 16 feet may be able to pass through.

During daylight hours when workers are present and lane closures are in effect, the speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph. During other construction times, the speed limit will be 65 mph. The posted speed will return to 75 mph when work is not being conducted (nights and weekends).

A-Core of Idaho, in Boise, is the contractor on the $2.54 million project.
