Construction on Idaho 33 west of Tetonia starts today (June 28)

RIGBY - Construction on Idaho 33 west of Tetonia started today (Thursday, June 28), the Idaho Transportation Department announced. The project is scheduled for completion in mid-August.

Crews will resurface 20 miles of Idaho 33 between Canyon Creek Bridge east of Newdale and Idaho 32 west of Tetonia. They also will upgrade guardrail at the Teton River Bridge.

Travel will be reduced to one lane, with flaggers directing traffic through the work zone. Motorists can expect delays. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph during the seal-coat phase of the project.

Commercial transporters hauling loads wider than 14 feet need to contact Maintenance Operations Manager Ken Hahn (208-745-5640) 24 hours in advance for special authorization.

Motorists should watch for construction workers, equipment and obey all traffic signs.

During the seal coat, drivers should observe posted speed limits and keep their distance from other vehicles to reduce potential windshield damage.

Seal coating consists of applying liquid asphalt, overlaying it with rock chips, packing the mixture by rolling, sweeping away loose chips and coating the new surface with additional asphalt to lock chips in place. The coating seals the pavement against water damage and provides a semi-rough surface for improved traction.

The transportation department awarded the $3.3 contract to HK Contractors Inc., of Idaho Falls.
