Additional Flashing Yellow Arrow signals to be installed at three intersections in Emmett in early September

BOISE - Three years ago, Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA) traffic signals were installed at the Idaho 16 intersections with Johns Avenue and Substation Road. Three more of the FYA signals will be added in Emmett in early September: at the junction of Idaho 16 and Idaho 52; at the intersection of 4th Street and Washington Street (Idaho 52); and at Main Street and Washington.

“The FYA signal is more efficient,” said Southwest Idaho Traffic Engineer Kevin Sablan. “It moves traffic through more quickly, and reduces the frustration for waiting drivers.” Sablan also said the signal saves on motorists' fuel and time at the intersection.

The flashing yellow arrow means, "proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic."

The signal has four phases:

1.  Green arrow represents a protected turn
2.  Flashing yellow arrow - proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic
3.  Solid Yellow arrow - prepare to stop
4.  Solid Red arrow - stop

Flashing yellow arrows indicate a permissive move for drivers turning left; they can make a left turn but must yield to oncoming traffic. If the signal detects that vehicles are not moving through the left-turn lane, a solid green arrow phase will follow, providing protected left-turn movements.
