ITD monitors fire near U.S. 12 south of Powell for highway impact
LEWISTON - A series of wildfires, collectively known as the Powell SBW Complex, continues to burn underbrush south of U.S. 12. The northern edge of the fire line is within several hundred yards of the highway.
U.S. Forest Service and Idaho Transportation Department officials continue to monitor the fires immediately south of U.S. 12 near Powell, between mileposts 142 and 160, and advise motorists that possible closure of the highway might be necessary.
Bob MacGregor of the USFS said the fire crews have been able to keep the fires from reaching the highway but the slopes to the north of the highway could be susceptible to spotting or ignition by embers because of their hotter and drier southern exposure. The crews are optimistic about keeping the fires on the south side of the river away from the highway but are planning ahead should weather conditions change.
“We want to advise the traveling public of the possibility of closures, but at this point, none have been necessary,” said Doral Hoff, ITD district operations engineer. “The crews have been doing a good job confining fires and allowing us to keep traffic moving through the area. “
Unexpected changes in fire behavior could change that with little notice, especially if fires reach the highway or smoke impairs visibility.
Hoff encouraged motorists to check the 511 Traveler Services website (511.idaho.gov) or call 511 before attempting to travel on the highway. The toll-free phone service is available to calls placed within Idaho. Callers from outside Idaho should use the toll-free number (888) 432-7623.
The fire complex, a series four major lightning-caused blazes, is burning underbrush south of Powell in the Clearwater-Nez Perce national forests and the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness area. Thursday morning it covered more than 35,000 acres in rugged terrain. Containment was at zero percent.
